Introduction to Leadership & Management
The Introduction to Leadership & Management suite of workshops (formerly known as Supervisory Management workshops) comprises six half-day sessions on a range of topics primarily aimed at people on the support staff career pathways who have little or no experience of first-line management. The content may also be of use to other types of staff who are completely new to first-line management. However, before booking it is advisable to also consider the content of the Leading and Managing in the New Academic Environment suite of workshops. These workshops are also supported by resources on the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE.)
Although the six half-days can be taken as a pick-and-mix option, many delegates find it of most benefit to take all six topics. To help with this option, the six workshops are organised over three full days approximately one month apart.

Introduction to Leadership & Management
- Overview of leadership and management: Leadership and management roles and functions, taking responsibility, managerial styles, and skills.
- Managing change: Nature of and reasons for change, effects of change, how staff cope with change, attitudes to change, initiating and managing change.
- Leading and managing people: Inspiring, motivating, supporting and helping people to grow in their roles and achieve their potential.
- Building and supporting the team: The nature of teams, individual differences and team role preferences, helping people work together, coaching and managing well-being.
- Delivering an effective service: Planning and enabling a successful service, stakeholders, decision making and clarifying processes.
- Communication skills for leaders and managers: Types of communication and when to use them, getting your message across, providing and receiving feedback, holding meetings, and active listening.
