Ethical Issues in Research: A Programme for Academic Researchers.Consideration of research ethics facilitates high quality research, encouraging researchers to pay greater attention to detail and be rigorous. As research activities increase in complexity, often conducted in an interdisciplinary manner, or with international collaborators, the ethical issues become more complex, consideration of the ethical issues becomes even more important. This programme, designed for academic and research staff in any discipline, aims to enable participants to develop the skills and knowledge to be reflective and to think creatively about the ethical problems that may arise in their research. It comprises eight 1 3/4 hour sessions in the period October to May 2012, each led by an experienced academic or professional in the field. The full programme is available here: Ethical Issues in Research: A Programme for Academic Researchers. To book a place on one or more of the sessions (which are free of charge to University of Leeds staff), please send an email, to Karen Donnelly, SDDU, Graduate Training and Support Centre, 1.35 Parkinson Building [T 32544 F 33662 E k.j.donnelly@adm.leeds.ac.uk].

Ethics Reviewer Training Workshop. The workshop’s aim is to deliver training in ethically reviewing research ethics applications, for members of staff who would value refresher training. The workshop’s specific aims are to:

  • Identify the key issues that ethics reviewers should expect to receive full information on;
  • Explore what constitutes appropriate feedback to applicants;
  • Provide a forum in which ethics reviewers from disparate research disciplines can share their experiences and tips on best practice.

Ethics review is not an exact science but through discussion it is expected that a consensus will emerge regarding what constitutes effective ethics review. A variety of applications and case studies will be discussed in this session within groups. The full programme is available here: Ethics Reviewer Training Workshop. To book a place please send an email to Karen Donnelly SDDU, Graduate Training and Support Centre, 1.35 Parkinson Building [T 32544 F 33662 E k.j.donnelly@adm.leeds.ac.uk].
