Staff and Departmental Development Unit

University of Leeds Teaching Award (descriptor 1)

ULTA-1 is taught and assessed by the Staff and Departmental Development Unit (SDDU).  To gain the Award participants have to complete a 20 credit M Level modules that covers a range of teaching issues.  The Award provides an opportunity for part-time teachers in HE to validate their training and teaching experience.

ULTA-1 satisfies the requirements of standard one of the UK National Framework for Professional Standards in Teaching and Supporting Learning. The course has been accredited by the Higher Education Academy at Associate Fellow grade.

These modules, providing advanced standing of 20 credits towards ULTA-2, are appropriate for:

  • research staff, teaching assistants and postgraduate research students who wish to pursue an academic career and/or to enhance their employability;
  • staff who teach part-time or as a secondary part of their role and who wish to enhance their practice

Participants will be required to attend bespoke workshops for the modules and to select from a range of workshop options that suit their particular discipline and teaching responsibilities.  The workshops, some of which are run especially for particular faculties and schools, are arranged during the autumn and spring terms.

Assessment of the Award is directly related to participants’ teaching.

This course forms the first stage in the university's continuing professional development in learning and teaching (CPD in Learning and Teaching) and provides postgraduate research students who wish to pursue an academic career an opportunity to gain credit and recognition for their teaching experience.
