Jim is responsible for leading, coordinating and managing the development and implementation of University strategy for staff development in the areas of research and innovation. Within this Jim leads the Staff and Departmental Development Unit’s Research and Innovation team who’s remit includes both staff training in the area and transferable skills training for research students. Jim also leads the University’s training programme for research student supervisors and internal examiners.

Jim’s recent achievements include the development of a University strategy map for researcher development, improving the University’s approach to engaging research students and their supervisors with the ethics of their research and developing and implementing online training for internal examiners of research degrees.

Jim was appointed as a Senior Staff Development Officer in August 2002. Prior to this Jim was a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University where he led research in the area of Axiomatic Design and was responsible for teaching in the areas of engineering design and manufacture. As part of his research Jim collaborated with organisations such as Rolls-Royce plc, The Boeing Company, BAE Systems, the Airbus consortium and Parametric Technology Corporation.

Prior to joining the University of Leeds Jim worked for White Young Prentice Royle, a firm of Building Services Consulting Engineers and Vickers Defence Systems.
