Departmental Development for Personal, Organisation and Management Development
In addition to our extensive set programme of workshops and courses SDDU can offer training and support on request to individual faculties, schools, departments and teams.
This includes:
- organising, co-ordinating or facilitating ‘away’ days;
- providing courses tailored to the needs of particular departments; and
- ‘bespoke’ training events for groups of staff in departments or for whole departments.

Examples
SDDU ran a short workshop on mentoring for both ITS and HR. This was designed to help clarify what successful mentoring consisted of from the both the point of view of mentor and mentee. It examined links with coaching and counselling skills as well as the role of the 'line manager' in developing people. Over 30 staff attended both workshops and SDDU have been asked to facilitate others in the future.
SDDU designed and ran a team building event for the Biological Science Learning and Teaching Team. Looking at ways to get people to have a deeper understanding of each other and identify ways of working together more effectively as a team whilst maintaining respect for their individual differences is quite a difficult brief to work with. However the message received from the team suggested it was a balance SDDU achieved: "just to say a big Thank You to you both for all the hard work and effort that went in to making yesterday go so well. The informal feedback I’ve picked up so far is that people enjoyed it and that the day was a success. The venue was great but it was also due to the activities you set for us all which took a great deal of planning.”
SDDU designed and delivered a programme on Customer Care for all Library Customer Services staff. The two-part programme took place over a period of four months and involved some 120 staff. The response from library staff has been very positive and has prompted library managers, staff and students to work more closely together to identify areas for improvement in customer service.
SDDU has facilitated a number of team discussions where there have been difficulties within a team, or between teams, and have worked to help all concerned find their own solutions to rebuilding successful relationships.
SDDU has helped to facilitate discussions in teams about the development of their strategy and the actions required to achieve it. Similar facilitated discussions have concentrated on structures or processes that need reviewing.
