Do you want to work out what your next steps should be on the route to a permanent academic post? Would you find it useful to hear what established academics have to say about their own career paths and how they negotiated that transition to a permanent post? Would you like to know exactly what an academic employer is looking for? This course is designed to help you to reflect on your career and where you should go next.

This course is for staff new to the role of the internal examiner of research degrees at Leeds and must be completed by an individual before they can act as an internal examiner.  This includes making sure that: the internal is clear about their equality with the external; the viva process is fair for all students, consistent across the university and challenging.

All research student supervisors must undertake training before they act in the role.  The course will consider the following phases in a candidature: admission, induction, training needs analysis, monitoring progress, ethical review, transfer and final examination. The course will also cover: supervisory style; the challenges in fulfilling a supervisor’s responsibilities; the success criteria of originality and independent critical ability.

There has been considerable growth in the training and development opportunities on offer for research students at Leeds. This session will provide an update on the new opportunities and initiatives at Leeds  and give an overview of the university requirements for the training and development of research students.
