Leading L&T Case study training materials

Welcome

These case studies, developed with funding from the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, are designed to be used in training and developing future leaders and managers in learning and teaching (L&T) in universities.

By providing situated case studies, it is intended that individuals will be able to apply more effectively their learning from (generic) courses that cover leadership and management issues, themes, models, ideas and skills. These case studies could be used in bespoke sessions, in action learning sets or with online discussion groups (see the section on Using the case studies).

The case studies look at realistic and demanding scenarios at three organisational ‘levels’ within universities: institutional, faculty and school/department. They are applicable to the following roles which require leadership and management attributes and competencies:

  • institutional level: chair/member of the university L&T committee
  • faculty level: chair/assistant dean/member of the faculty L&T committee
  • school/departmental level: chair/member of the L&T committee
  • module leader/programme leader/subject leader

The case studies can be viewed in their entirety or by section, either online or downloaded as pdfs. They are structured on Kotter’s ‘8 Step’ Change Model. More details of the model and the process of developing the case studies are available in the Methodology and Project sections of this site. We have added contextual information at the start of each case study to set the scene and tell you a little about the leader concerned. In addition, there is a What was learned section at the end of each case study.

If you have comments about the case studies, ideas for ways of using them or wish to discuss other aspects of the project, please email leadinglandtenquiries@leeds.ac.uk
